The press called Woman at War one of the most “feminist films” in Cannes this year. Indeed, not many films today center on the story about a middle-aged woman but this fearless Icelandic eco-warrior drills deep into our planetary problems. It is a quirky action comedy about a fifty-year-old choir teacher Halla known in the media only as “the Mountain Woman”, who secretly wages a war on the local aluminum industry. But the passionate environmental mission to protect the pristine Icelandic Highlands will become a mission impossible when she gets a letter from the adoption center granting her application. However, it’s not all gloom and doom – a small jazz band following Halla everywhere she goes reminds us that saving our planet is a hopeful project.
