The setting is all-boys posh boarding school Caldermount. The hero – bookworm Amberson, working-class scholarship student at the bottom of the school’s social ladder. When the French teacher’s daughter Agnes arrives to school, Amberson’s life is turned upside down. He suddenly finds himself playing matchmaker for Winchester, the school’s handsome but boring hero, an ultra-privileged alpha jock. Winchester definitely has the looks but it’s Amberson who has the wits. A fresh and vibrant (rom)comedy, Old Boys is a modern twist on the timeless story of Cyrano de Bergerac. The critics have compared Old Boys to Wes Anderson’s Rushmore but one should also have in mind the topics of class struggle and authority defiance in the history of the boarding school film genre.
