“Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better…” Why not just listen to the Beatles one more time? Because things never start with an international co-production in the cinemas, or on the road to success. It always starts with letting a project into your heart, loving it and then finding people with whom to realize it, making it better. Then you have a love story that just grows its own way. Is it troubling? Certainly. Is it difficult? Of course. But, in the end, you have been enriched in ways you could not have even imagined.

In over 25 years of her work, Marianne Slot has produced many international films by directors including Lucrecia Martel, Malgoska Szumowska, Lisandro Alonso, Sergei Loznitsa, Benedikt Erlingsson, Naomi Kawase, etc. She has co-produced most of Lars von Trier’s films. She was a president of World Cinema at the National Center of Cinematography and the moving image (CNC) 2013–15. She received the French title Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Cannes May 2015.

A Gentle Creature, 2017, France, Germany, Lithuania, The Netherlands, 143 min

A woman lives alone in rural outskirts of a town in Russia. One day she receives a parcel she sent to her incarcerated husband, marked “return to sender”. Shocked and confused, she has no choice but to travel to the prison in a remote region of the country in search of an explanation. So begins the story of a battle against this impenetrable fortress, the prison where the forces of social evil are constantly at work. Braving violence and humiliation, in the face of all opposition, our protagonist embarks on a blind quest for justice. Inspired by Dostoyevsky’s short story, Sergei Loznitsa leads us into the land of crime without punishment – a journey into the abyss. The film premiered in competition at Cannes in 2017.
